TOWN'S GALLANT FIGHT IN WEST RIDING CUP
Facing a full Leeds United Second Division side in the final of the West Riding Cup at Elland Road Leeds, yesterday afternoon. Halifax
Town were beaten by the odd goal of three, after wiping out United's first-half lead.
Town offered a close challenge throughout to their West Riding neighbours, and they were unlucky not to force a Shay replay, for some of
theirmoves were well engineered writes "Hotspur".
It was an entrtaining game, and the spirit and eagerness shown by Town merited a better defeat than defeat. There marksmanship still
needs improving, but they found the way to goal very often and did some smart passing and switching.
A few centres and goalmouth openings were wasted because of hesitancy in shooting, but it was a most lively and encouraging display.
Lacked finish
The Town defence again exerted a marked influence, defending well and putting through, some nice passes to the men in front. Town were
dangerous on the flanksand it was a pity that some excellent moves were not just finished off. But there always seemed a real possiblilty of the
scores being level.
Frost led the Town attack for most of the game and showed he has recovered from his pulled muscle injury. He played a good game despite
receiving a head injury in collision with Kerfoot.
Town's equaliser was netted by Frost after 66 minutes when Cox took the ball upfield and tried a low shot which was going away to the right;
Frost met it and closed in to score a good goal with a ground shot in off the foot of the upright.
Winning goal
Four minutes later, Charles who had headed an opening goal from Meek's centre just before the interval, put Leeds ahead with a gift goal.
Savage had stopped a header from the Leeds leader, but instead of turning the ball round an upright, he knocked it down to the ground, and
before he could regather, Charles had scored
Darbyshire and Holt were particularly tricky and assertive, the former putting in some good work on the right wing, and Holt being thrustful
and nippy. Murphy did well, but the line did not quite produce the striking power that would have told a different storyin view of the slendid
approach play, Packard, Cox and Williams were stout defenders with Geddes and Moss in good form.
Savage made several good saves notably from Iggleden. Charles was well held by Packard, but the two goals were the reward of persistency.
After the match, Mr A. Brook Hurst, of Huddersfield, chairman of the F.A. presented the Cup to Tommy Burden, Captain of Leeds United, who
congratulated Town on a clean sporting game.
Mr Brook Hirst congratulated Leeds, and offering his congraulations to Eric Williams, the Town skipper, said that he hoped that some time in
the future his team would have better luck.
Mr Brook Hirst presented pewter tankards as souvenirs to both teams. He was supported by Mr C.W. Schofield (President of the West Riding
County F.A.and F. Hill (Secretary)
